What is a Lorem Ipsum generator?#
A Lorem Ipsum generator produces filler text — the placeholder paragraphs you drop into a design so you can judge layout, typography and spacing before the real copy exists. The traditional Latin pool (“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…”) has been the typesetter’s default for five centuries precisely because it looks like real prose without distracting the reader with meaning. But “looks like prose” is not the same in every script: Latin filler is wrong for a CJK layout, and random English words are wrong for a Latin-styled mockup.
This generator ships three voices and four output shapes. The voices are Latin (the canonical pool), English (meaningful English words drawn from a real vocabulary), and Chinese (two-character words in the style of the Thousand Character Classic). The shapes are paragraph, sentence, word and list, so the same generator fills a hero block, a caption, a tag cloud and a bulleted feature list. Each voice has an optional classic opening — the canonical “Lorem ipsum…” sentence for Latin, “The quick brown fox…” for English, and the 天地玄黄,宇宙洪荒。 opening of the Thousand Character Classic for Chinese — which is prepended to the first unit so the output reads like a real typesetting placeholder rather than a random word soup.
Everything is generated locally from bundled word tables — no network, no external corpus.
How to use it#
- Click Generate in the toolbar (or just tweak an option — the page regenerates on change).
- Pick the type: Paragraph, Sentence, Word, or List. The count field then means “that many paragraphs / sentences / words / list items”.
- Set the count. Each type has a ceiling that protects the tab: paragraphs cap at 100, sentences at 1000, words at 10000, list items at 1000.
- Choose the language (voice): Latin, English, or Chinese.
- Tick or untick Classic start. When on, the first unit opens with the canonical sentence for the chosen voice.
- Hit Copy to take the output, or Clear to empty the pane.
The status bar below the output reports how much was generated, so you can tell at a glance whether you produced five paragraphs or fifty words.
Key features#
- Three voices, not one. Latin for the classic look, English when the placeholder should read as real words (useful for UI screenshots and demos), Chinese for CJK layout testing with two-character words and full-width punctuation.
- Four output shapes. Paragraphs for body blocks, sentences for captions, words for tag clouds and short labels, lists for bulleted mockups — all from one toolbar.
- Optional classic opening per voice. Latin gets the canonical “Lorem ipsum…” sentence, English gets “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”, and Chinese gets the
天地玄黄,宇宙洪荒。日月盈昃,辰宿列张。opening. The opening is prepended only to the first unit, so the rest stays randomised. - Bounded counts. Each type has a hard ceiling, so a stray
999999in the count field cannot freeze the tab or dump megabytes into the DOM. - Deterministic under the hood. The generator runs on a seedable PRNG (mulberry32), so the same seed reproduces the same output — useful if you ever need stable fixtures for screenshots or tests.
- Local word tables. The word pools are bundled in the page; nothing is fetched from a network.
Worked example#
With type = Paragraph, count = 1, language = Latin, and Classic start on, the first paragraph always opens with the canonical sentence (the rest of the paragraph is randomised, so it will differ each run):
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Vivamus vestibulum suspendisse potenti integer aenean pellentesque habitant morbi.
Switch language to Chinese with Classic start on and the first paragraph opens with the Thousand Character Classic:
天地玄黄,宇宙洪荒。日月盈昃,辰宿列张。山川河流花草树木春夏秋冬风雨雷电阳光。
Switch type to List and the same voice produces bulleted items instead:
- 天地玄黄宇宙洪荒
- 日月山川
- 春夏秋冬
The opening is fixed and reproducible; everything after it is freshly randomised each time you click Generate.
FAQ#
Why are there three languages? Isn’t Lorem Ipsum always Latin?#
The Latin pool is the traditional choice for Western layouts, but it is the wrong texture for testing a CJK interface — the characters, line-breaking and punctuation behave completely differently. The Chinese voice uses two-character words and full-width stops so a Chinese mockup behaves like a Chinese mockup. The English voice exists for cases where the placeholder should look like real, readable words (demo screenshots, marketing comps) rather than fake Latin.
What is the “classic start” for?#
Without it, the first word is random and the output reads like a shuffled word list. With it, the first sentence is the canonical opening for that voice, which is what makes “Lorem ipsum…” paragraphs look like real typeset text rather than random filler. It is purely a cosmetic convention inherited from five centuries of printing.
How much can it generate?#
Each type has a ceiling: 100 paragraphs, 1000 sentences, 10000 words, or 1000 list items. These bounds exist so a typo in the count field cannot lock up the browser. For most layout work a handful of paragraphs is plenty; if you need to fill a long-scroll page, generate paragraphs at the maximum and paste repeatedly.
Is the output reproducible?#
The generator uses a seedable PRNG internally, so a fixed seed produces identical output across runs. The page itself does not expose the seed control — each click of Generate draws fresh randomness — but the underlying design means the same seed would reproduce the same text, which matters if you script fixtures against the same library code.
Can I use this text in production content?#
You can, but you should not pass it off as real copy. Lorem-style filler is meant to be replaced; publishing it as final content reads as unfinished work and is exactly the kind of thin page search engines and ad reviewers flag. Use it for mockups, demos and screenshots, then swap in real writing before launch.
